"Over the past year I have helped to carry out sales and marketing, worked with customers and even trained new team members"
19 year-old Claire Burrow from Gateshead took the decision to embark on an apprenticeship with NECC due to the increasing surplus of University graduates entering the employment market.
Claire decided that the opportunity to gain work experience whilst continuing with academic studies was too good to miss and began working with her parents Dave and Sue at their business, Jaspers Catering Ltd.
Claire said:
“I signed up with NECC as I knew when I left school that I did not want to go straight on to University. I don't believe that a degree alone is enough to achieve a good job in a business; experience counts for just as much.
“Over the past year I have helped to carry out sales and marketing, worked with customers and even trained new team members. It’s an opportunity that not many 19 year olds have and achieving qualifications alongside of this makes it a much better experience.”
Claire’s mum and boss Sue Burrow said:
“She’s a very keen learner and is enthusiastic to gain knowledge in all areas of the business, particularly with the marketing and meeting clients. It’s a fantastic opportunity for her to learn some very valuable skills in a relatively new business.”
After the success of her apprenticeship so far, Claire now has ambitions to take progress higher with her qualifications.
She added:
“I hope to move onto the NECC Foundation Degree in Leadership and Management. Being able to carry out full-time work whilst studying towards a degree is a great opportunity.”
